Charges not likely in Gary shooting death

Investigators do not expect charges against the parents of a teenage Gary girl shot dead Friday night in a scuffle with her brother over a handgun, police said Sunday.

No parents were in the home in the 5800 block of East 10th Avenue in Gary's Aetna neighborhood when the girl was shot dead Friday night, police Cmdr. Samuel Roberts said.

The girl was holding a gun someone found earlier in the house, Roberts said. Her teenage brother tried to take the gun from her, and the gun fired, Roberts said.

The boy was questioned and released to his parents after the shooting, Roberts said.

"It appears to be an accident, but it will be presented to the prosecutor for review," Roberts said.

The Lake County coroner's office did not release information on the victim or the shooting during the weekend.

Gary City Council charges $50,000 on credit cards

GARY -- A brewing budget crisis didn't stop members of the City Council from charging more than $50,000 to their taxpayer-funded credit cards during the first six months of 2008.

***Marilyn Krusas, D-1st, charged $11,000 to her credit card between January and June, more than any other member of the council.

Krusas also appeared to travel the most, visiting Austin, Texas, Charleston, S.C., Rapid City, S.D., Santa Fe, N.M, and Washington, D.C

***Carolyn Rogers, D-4th, charged about $250 to her credit card at local gas stations, but she said that was a reimbursement for council business.

Rogers said she couldn't explain another $200 in delinquency fees charged to her card.

"I'm not really sure what happened," Rogers said.

***Allen charged $200 at local gas stations and $170 at local restaurants. He said anything that's not deducted from his city travel fund is paid back with personal funds.

Gary man charged in July 30 shooting death

Gerald "G-Money" Houston was charged this week with murder and two counts of felony recklessness relating to the July 30 death of 36-year-old Lewis Reid Jr.

Houston, 33, of Gary, gunned down Reid, who was an acquaintance, after an argument in the 5200 block of Broadway in Gary, Lake Criminal Court records allege.

Reid was standing outside with several others when the two yelled at each other, Gary police said. Houston pulled a gun and started shooting at the group as he ran away, records allege.

Reid died of gunshot wounds after he was transported to a nearby hospital. Court records show he was shot in the stomach.

After shooting at the group, Houston jumped into a vehicle and drove off, witnesses told police.

Gary man sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison for auto theft

CROWN POINT | A Gary man was sentenced recently to 5 1/2 years in prison for auto theft, according to the Lake County prosecutor's office.

Dennis Earl Dates, 41, pleaded guilty May 27 to the felony charge.

Dates met the male victim on Jan. 10, 2007, at a liquor store and asked for a ride, prosecutors said. In the vicinity of 19th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street in Gary, Dates snatched the car keys from the victim and drove away.

Dates has a prior auto theft conviction in Lake County in 1988, Lake Criminal Court records show.

Police arrest felon

possessing shotgun

Police looking for the source of gunfire arrested a Gary man charged Tuesday with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Jeffrey Scott Burgess, 30, 2032 Martin Luther King Drive, was arrested on a Gary City Court warrant. In court Monday, his mother told the judge her son needs help with substance abuse problems. Burgess was referred to drug court, where his was scheduled to appear today.

Cpl. Calvin Curington and Detective LaRia Crews arrested Burgess Friday after he told them he hid his shotgun in an abandoned house near his home.

A neighbor's privacy fence had been damaged by pellets.

Burgess, convicted of attempted battery in 1998, was also charged with criminal mischief and resisting law enforcement.

Daughter, mother accused of arson

August 20, 2008
Recommend

By Lori Caldwell Post-Tribune staff writer

GARY-- A mother-daughter facing eviction used candles to set fire to their Glen Park home, which was gutted in a January blaze, police said.

Nicole V. Booker, 38, and her daughter Coretta D. Miller, 20, were charged Tuesday with arson, Detective Cpl. Mark Salazar said.

Both wo-men face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

The owner of the property told Salazar the women were three months be-hind in their rent for a house in the 4200 block of Madison Street, the probable cause affidavit states.

Paul Turner sought to evict the women and a court order was issued Jan. 7.

On Jan. 8, the power was discontinued at the property and the women used candles to set some clothing on fire in a bedroom, Booker's mother told police.

After lighting the candles, the women told Booker's mother, "let's leave," then "drove around ... came back and saw that smoke was coming out of the roof," the affidavit states.

The house sustained more than $50,000 in damages. Booker's mother called Turner and told him the fire was not accidental, as officials originally believed.

Booker and Miller are not in custody. An arrest warrant has been issued for the pair.

Region man sentenced for dealing cocaine

CROWN POINT | Reginald Deberry, 22, was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison and five years of probation for dealing cocaine, Lake Criminal Court records show.

Deberry, who lists both Gary and Chicago home addresses, pleaded guilty in May to the felony charge. In return for his guilty plea, Lake County prosecutors dropped misdemeanor counts of resisting law enforcement and driving while suspended in that case and a felony charge of sexual misconduct of a minor in a separate case.

Court records alleged Deberry had sexual relations with a 15-year-old Merrillville girl in 2006, who later gave birth to his child.

The death of a 5-month-old Gary boy Thursday, originally believed to be an accidental drowning, has been ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroner's office, officials said Friday.

The coroner's office said an autopsy found multiple skull fractures due to blunt force trauma on Ryne White Jr., who lived at 4377 W. 23rd Ave. in the Oak Knoll Renaissance apartments.

The baby's father, Ryne A. White, 23, told police he was bathing his infant son in the kitchen sink when another young child began crying in an upstairs bedroom. White told police he went to check on the crying child and when he returned, Ryne was not breathing.

The case is being investigated by the Lake County Coroner's office, Gary police, and the Lake County Crime Lab.

GARY | It was five years ago this summer when Michael Jackson returned to his hometown of Gary to receive a key to the city.

On Tuesday, it was the father following in his son's footsteps.

Joe Jackson, who turns 80 on Saturday, received his birthday gift early when Gary Mayor Rudy Clay presented him not only with the key to the city, but also with updated plans for the proposed Jackson Museum and Cultural Center and unveiled a new street sign in honor of the Jackson family.

The entire interior of Gary City Hall was decked out with large, fresh-cut flower arrangements and draped fabric swags, while signs reading "Welcome Home Joe Jackson" covered all the doors and windows.

Gary man gets 6 years for gas station robbery

A Gary man was sentenced this week to six years in prison and five years in Lake County Community Corrections for robbing a Merrillville gas station, according to the prosecutor's office.

Austin Weatherspoon, 25, was convicted in Lake County Criminal Court on July 10 of felony robbery.

Weatherspoon robbed Lucky's Mobil Gas Station in the 7500 block of Broadway just after 10 p.m. Jan. 18, 2007, prosecutors said. Weatherspoon entered the gas station with his gun drawn and took $1,500 from the cash drawer.
