Indiana American Water has issued a boil order for eight Northwest Indiana communities until further notice because of a decrease in water pressure, according to a news release from the company.

The eight communities are Gary, Merrillville, Portage, South Haven, Porter, Hobart, Burns Harbor and Chesterton.

"A power failure in the grid serving our Ogden Dunes plant resulted in a decrease in the system's pressure," Northwest Indiana Network Manager Randy Moore said. "In these situations a boil order advisory is issued just as a precautionary measure in the event the system would have encountered some contamination during the low-pressure event."

The company is asking affected customers to vigorously boil for at least one minute any water used for drinking, cooking, oral hygiene or to make ice. The water is safe for bathing and other uses.

The boil advisory is effective immediately. Indiana American will issue a notice removing the boil order once tests have confirmed the water is safe.

Indiana American Water serves more than 700,000 residents in 35 cities and towns in the state.
