Club plugs in to young adults

MERRILLVILLE | Owners of a new dance club in town hope the establishment will help address the need for a place where young adults can spend their time.

Ed and Dana Malone opened Voltage dance club at 1500 E. 83rd Ave. on Sept. 26, which strictly caters to patrons 17 to 20 years old.

The club is open from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and offers several dance areas as well as screens showing music videos. There is also a lounge with pool tables and dart boards for those who don't feel like dancing, Dana Malone said.

Ed and Dana are no strangers to the dance club business. The two also own Hooligan's nightclub, which is located next to Voltage.

Dana Malone said there won't be any problems with the crowds from the two locations mixing because Voltage is open on Fridays and Hooligan's is open on Thursdays and Saturdays.

In June, some town councilmen had safety concerns when they contemplated approving a special exception to open the club, but ended up approving the special exception after hearing about the security. The approval also came with some conditions, including a three-month review of the establishment.

Dana Malone said two off-duty police officers will be hired in addition to her own security staff at the location. There also will be a metal detector at Voltage.

Town Councilman Lance Huish, who also serves as the Merrillville police operations commander, said on-duty police officers also will likely stop at the location when they are not busy with a call to make sure there are no problems.

Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch said the Police Department hasn't received calls for service at the facility and he doesn't anticipate problems at Voltage.

Huish said as long as the owners provide young adults with a safe place to meet with their friends, he won't have any problems with the establishment.

"We need things for younger people to do," Huish said.

HOBART | Two 21-year-old women allegedly stole about $3,400 from a Jimmy John's restaurant where one of them worked and reported a false armed robbery there.

On Dec. 9, Hobart police were dispatched to the restaurant at 1648 E. 80th Ave. after receiving a call from Alicia Davis, of Gary, to check on her cousin Paige Lampkin, of Merrillville.

Lampkin reported there was an armed robbery at the business involving a man carrying a handgun. Court records show she indicated the man took money from the business's safe.

In June, Lampkin admitted to police a robbery didn't occur there. She told police she and Davis made up the story and they split money from the registers and the safe.

Davis and Lampkin were charged with felony theft and misdemeanor false informing in Lake Criminal Court.

Charges could be filed in M'ville stabbing

MERRILLVILLE | A trail of blood led police to the location of a stabbing victim after officers responded to the incident Saturday morning, police said.

A 44-year-old Merrillville man suffered lacerations and stab wounds to his chest and back about 11 a.m. at a house in the 9500 block of Sullivan Court, according to a police report.

The victim's condition initially was listed as critical. On Monday, Merrillville police Sgt. Bob Morgan said the victim's wounds were not life-threatening.

Police believe the stabbing occurred during a dispute between the victim and another man.

The suspect in the case was seen knocking on a window inside the residence after police arrived to the Sullivan Court home, Morgan said.

The suspect agreed to meet police at a patio door, and he was placed into restraints, Morgan said.

The suspect suffered lacerations to his wrists, neck and stomach, he said. Police said the wounds are believed to be self-inflicted.

Both men were taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, but the suspect was later airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., Morgan said.

The suspect was in stable condition Monday, Morgan said.

A butcher knife was recovered in the kitchen sink at the home, Morgan said. A second knife, which was blood-covered, was located in the bathroom sink, he said.

Morgan expects to present charges to the Lake County prosecutor's office, but he hasn't indicated when the charges could be filed.
