The State of Florida, controlled by Republican fundamentalists, has used its big government power to decide that a 13-year old girl, although she has clearly, repeatedly and cogently expressed her wish to have an abortion, cannot.

If the 13 year old girl wanted to kill herself, drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes should she be allowed?

Exactly. It's one thing for an adult to make such a serious medical decision for herself. And liberals often oppose even the parental consent or even notification provisions, so you literally have someone too young to drive, drink booze, or even get a pierced earring but it's ok to give them the power of life & death as an absolute right and perhaps be scarred for life mentally and/ or physically? Teens aren't even accountable for getting on the internet and letting themselves be seduced by adults, but we are to trust their judgement skills in an even more serious matter? I don't think so!

Why not just let the people decide!

When the voters are actually allowed to decide, the crackpot ideas of these people tend to get shot down in the voting booths. They don't like the idea of the hopelessly ignorant general populace deciding what is best for themselves and their families. Their idea of social justice is to have one or more enlightened judges decide what is best for the little bitter people who are too stupid to know what is best for them.
Allowing voters to decide certainly didn't please a lot of people when it came down to a vote on Proposition 8; they're still whining about that one. I'm sure it won't be long before they try to get the judiciary involved with that decision, if they haven't already.
Believe it or not, the average American has a good deal of common sense and a pretty good idea of what is right and wrong; that's why there is so much opposition to allowing an actual vote on abortion. Without some amorphous provision in the constitution equating abortion to privacy, the voice of the people might beg to differ.

And that itself is a serious problem. Judges were never intended to create laws. For that matter neither was the office of President intended to create laws except perhaps with respect to foreign policy, though treaties still had to be ratified by the Senate, and maybe with respect to commerce.

In it's Constitutional role all judges were supposed to do is decide if something is Constitutional, not decide how to amend or create laws.

You know how the liberals love to legislate morality.

Then you can explain to me the motivation to ban smoking in bars but not casinos without a certain state rep from Gary getting his palm greased. I'll be happy to discuss it with you.
Yes?

Sure...I guess we can start saying that you think the repubs aren't legislating morality in Indiana...(Shut up and drive thread)...There is only one reason that casinos would be excepted because that is what the casino lobby wants...and when businesses talk repubs listen...

Dear Stupid,

State Rep from Gary is Charlie Brown, who (in case the word GARY didn't serve as enough of a clue) is one of yours...a DEMOCRAT.

He is the one that wants the casino only exemption.

The Republicans revised his bill to include all 21 and over establishments.

This let's adults make decisions for themselves concerning personal choices.

This let's business (bar) owners make decisions for them selves.

Charlie Brown does not want that, he wants to send the bill back through so it ONLY EXEMPTS CASINOS.

Is this getting through that thick head of yours?

But the one bit that you did get right, was that his motivation is most likely a financial one from the casino lobby.

i.e. Lake County Democrats are corrupt.

Did you even read the thread before opening your mouth with that stupid statement?

Probably not.

Typical liberal, no facts, but they've got an uninformed opinion they want to shoot their mouths off about.

Casinos have long argued that a smoking ban would hurt business, and the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency recently estimated in a fiscal note that the state could lose more than $180 million a year in taxes if gamblers couldn’t light up. The high price tag in a time of slumping state revenues meant there was no hope for a comprehensive ban, said Rep. Charlie Brown, a Democrat from Gary who has pushed for such a ban for several years.

Committee Chair Rep. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville...“In this budgetary environment we’re talking about — with every penny tight and any dollar taken away is a dollar taken away from K-12 education — it’s our obligation to maybe minimize the impact,” Tim Brown said.

Dear Stupid,

Perhaps you could explain why it would be "bad for business" for a few of casino's, but just fine to legislate the same morality for thousands of privately owned bars and clubs across the state, or do they not pay taxes too?

I think you shot your self in the head, but what the hell...you're not using it anyway.

The stupidity of chuckmo continues to amaze. Chuckmo, an incredibly angry left-winger--go figure--is on this personal mission of his to point out hypocrisy whenever he thinks he sees it. He's not smart enough to pull it off and the results are always pathetic..but we've come to expect it from chuckmo. Now..because schools need the money..chuckblo is OK with an exemption to a smoking ban for corporate casinos. Yet, chuckmo is all for a smoking ban in a little bar which may be the owners sole source of income. Somebody better call the hypocrisy police on chunkmo.

Yeah, chuckmo - you're all over the map on this one. A little consistency wouldn't hurt. It seems that people dying from second-hand smoke is A-OK if you are directly benefiting from it, but if someone else is benefiting from it, then that's where you draw the line.

Ground chuck is only here because he detests conservatives and he thinks he is aggravating them. Unfortunately for him, he's the only one getting angry and frustrated. I guess I could be wrong, but I don't anyone here takes him seriously.

I read somewhere there is no enforcement of the law unless there is numerous complaints by employees or patrons in Illinois.

The teeth in the law are the patrons & employees .

Again I must be too existential for you or THD (aka tmr9)...I think there should be a TOTAL smoking ban in Indiana...but since businesses run the repubs they caved. That is why when the repubs put so many exceptions most people pulled their support for what it morphed into. That is/was the point I was making.
PS...If calling me names makes you and your cohorts feel more important go for it..

Okay then put your money where your mouth is.

If a municipality bans smoking then they also have to ban tobacco sales and all tax revenue derived from it.

We'll get you off of the taxpayer's teet yet chuck.
