Thank you for the info. I crossed over the bridge and saw that the water was high. That was Thursday.

But please I know that The Little Calumet River goes through areas where the houses are worth money, and the people have money.

But keep in mind that there is THE GRAND CALUMET RIVER. It goes through areas where people live and schools are present. Granted the houses aren't worth a lot and the people are poorer. But The Grand
Calumet is VERY TOXIC!!

So could you please let people know when it is the
Little or Grand Calumet River.

Thank you.

The GRAND Calumet very rarely floods. I don't remember the last time it did. It's a good thing it doesn't. As you pointed out, it is very toxic.

I have lived by the GRAND Calumet most of my life.
I don't remember it ever going over either.

It doesn't flow, it oozes.

But with the rain, the level does raise.

But Hammond doesn't keep the river cleaned out. Check by Columbia Ave. The river looks pretty good in other places but not in the city. It is blocking the river.

The water has to go somewhere. So up the banks. The water does need to flow.

The Grand Calumet is a Federal Water way.
Sailing ships (with sails) use to come up the river. That is why the bridges over the river moved.

With raw sewage, heavy metals and the like in the water, it is toxic. Why endanger the people their property, and schools, the kids.

Hammond should clean the trash out of the river.
They should clean the over growth of plants out of the river, so it can flow again.

After all they spent thousands to make a winding walk along the river in sections.

But you need the water to flow, and an eye kept on its levels also.

After the flooding in Munster in the fall, our church was one of the churches that stepped and helped the flooding victims. My wife and I spent several days doing clean-up work in Munster as volunteers. The homeowners who were flooded were not people with money, as you say. They were average Americans who got up and went to work everyday so that they could live in a safe community with good schools. Several of the homes belonged to senior citizens living on fixed incomes. We also helped with several homes where the owners had no flood insurance at all and would have been homeless if it weren't for the kindness and generosity of the local churches. Having your home flood and losing all your possessions is a traumatic event, whether you are middle class or poor.
