Fed to give NWI more than $6 million

Money will go toward upgrades for transportation, law enforcement, education

INDIANAPOLIS | Northwest Indiana is set to receive more than $6 million in federal funds for transportation, law enforcement and education projects.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a $447 billion appropriations measure that included the money for Northwest Indiana. The legislation still must be approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Barack Obama.

The projects to be funded include $2 million for South Shore Line infrastructure, $1.9 million for law enforcement technology improvements, $900,000 to Crown Point to widen North Street/109th Avenue between Interstate 65 and Ind. 53 and $550,000 to build a new Portage Behavioral Health Center, among others.

U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, said he's proud to be able to bring federal dollars home to Indiana.

"These investments in our infrastructure, community safety and our people will help create jobs, grow our economy and improve the quality of life for everybody in the region," Visclosky said.

Let's just hope Rudy Clay doesn't get any of it.

We should not take any of it and demand the government give it back to the tax payers who it came from.

I'd sooner do that with the $32M they're getting to work on Marquette Park.
