A 29-year-old Hammond, Ind. man described as a violent enforcer for the Latin Kings street gang has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for armed robbery and burglary.

Jeremiah Shane Farmer, 29, pleaded guilty March 1 to robbery and burglary, according to a release Monday from the Lake County, Ind. prosecutor's office.

Gary Detective Jeffrey Hemphill, who investigates violent crimes, testified at the sentencing hearing that the initial case against Farmer involved a shooting.

He said once Farmer was in custody people who feared Farmer started coming forward about crimes he had committed. Hemphill described Farmer, who sports various tattoos -- some gang-related -- on his face and neck, as a violent enforcer for the Latin Kings, the release said.

Farmer has been on probation before as both a juvenile and as an adult and served time in Indiana Boys School and benefited from pretrial diversion, according to Deputy Prosecutor Jamise Perkins, who noted Farmer's prior juvenile criminal history. Perkins, the release said, reiterated Det. Hemphill's observation that "many victims are terrified of this man."

"Only when they knew for sure that he was locked up in police custody they came forward," Perkins said. "In essence, he is a menace to society."

On Feb. 7, 2008, Farmer broke a window to gain entrance into a residence in the 2700 block of Hanley Street in Gary and stole a computer, radio, DVD player and jewelry, the release said.

On Feb. 7, 2009, Farmer robbed a passenger in his vehicle at gunpoint of his wallet, which contained $750. Farmer had stopped the vehicle and struck the victim several times in the head and face with a crowbar before pulling out the handgun and demanding the wallet
