Hi there,

I am likely to move to the Northwest Indiana area some time this fall, and I'm trying to figure out where I should move to. My boyfriend will commute to Indiana, so we are thinking about the Merrillville, possibly Hobart areas. My question is how I can most easily commute, preferably by train, to downtown Chicago? I've found one commuter line that runs through Gary. Does anybody have any other leads (there's a rail line that runs smack through Merrillville...)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

kathrin

The South Shore runs along the lake from the Indiana/Illinois border to South Bend. There are multiple stops along the way. It is run by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. Their website is:

www.nictd.com

Hope this helps.

Hello Kathrin,

I noticed you mentioned Merrillville and Hobart for your possible locations to move to. Have you considered Gary? If not, why? Just curious.

Careful answering Dwight's question, Kathrin. If you don't say that you would love to live in Gary, you will be painted as a low-life racist, no matter what reason you give.

You might not want to live in Gary because of the crime. You might not want to live in Gary because of the property taxes. You might not want to live in Gary because there are better schools nearby. You might not want to live in Gary because of the property values. You might not want to live in Gary (or some other communities nearby) because of the political climate and government waste.

No matter the reasons you have, if you don't say that you that you would like to live in Gary more than any other community in Lake or Porter Counties, then Dwight will be sure to spin your disinterest into you being racist. I don't know what race you belong too, and it really isn't relevant.

With Dwight, everything is about race and everyone who is white is a racist. Read his posts - you may or may not agree with my statement.

Sadly, his good points are diffused by his vitriole. I agree with some of his points, but he isn't interested in anything other than painting everyone who is not African-American as a racist. It's sad.

Dewey my friend,

All of your "you might not want to's" is indicative of my point. You told the truth about the economic conditions of Gary. That is no secret. But not by request. You exercised your constitutional right to voice your biased opinion of Gary. Your attempt to inform Kathrin of the conditions of Gary is exactly what I have been saying. I simply asked Kathrin a question concerning her exclusion of Gary as one of her choices for residency. You were the one who tossed the race card into this equation my friend.

Dwight

I ride the South Shore Monday-Friday every week, and it is about as dependable as it gets. It is definately better than commuting by car right now. If you have any questions let me know.

THere are no other trains except the South Shore, and unless you live in Gary, Hammond or East Chicago you'll have to commute to the station. THere are some lovely hiomes in the Miller section of Gary with he added benefit of being near the lakefront. Hammond's Robertsdale area offers the same benefits, but you are still looking at a commute of severa l miles to the train station from there.
