In the November 2 election, there were 51 Democrats and 43 Republicans elected to public office in Lake County.

In the past 25 years, over 50 (about 52) Democrat elected officials have been convicted and gone to prison.

In the past 50 years, there has not been a single GOP elected official even indicted.

LAKE COUNTY CORRUPTION IS DEMOCRAT!!

Cure the problem in 2011!!

Democrat corruption is the main block to economic growth in Lake County.

With Bill Dolan's and Sue Erler's articles about consulting, engineering and legal fees from corrupt Lake County Democrats and about Carol Ann Seaton and her multiple residences and her dead father's homestead exemptions, The Times is starting to realize that Democrat corruption is hurting their ad revenue.

I agree with much of what you said, and I too despise political corruption.
But don't make the mistake of thinking Republicans are all honest just because they haven't been indicted. Some of the corruption has taken place at levels too high to be subjected to the legal system.
There is greed on both sides of the aisle.

I'm not talking about high national levels.

In Lake County, Corruption is Democrat.

The ballot box and the Criminal Courts are the places to remedy Lake County Democrat corruption.

Companies don't have to come to a place with corrupt Democrat Pay-to-Play politics. Corrupt Democrats are costing everyone jobs and costing the newspapers ads and circulation.

The economy and the stock market have been coming back for 6 months or so in the rest of the U.S. - but not in Lake County - thanks to the corrupt Democrats. Homes are being foreclosed and some are empty. Shopping centers have empty stores and businesses are closing.

I would agree.

The race between Hank Adams and Carol Ann Seaton brought it home to me. The Democrats were shameless in backing a clearly corrupt Democrat and couldn't care less what was best for Lake County.

In Crown Point, you have the same thing. A pay-to-play Uran administration is running the city down the drain. Stores, businesses and houses are empty while Uran hires new consultants to contribute to his campaign fund.

Enough!!

Even in boom times, Lake County will lag the rest of the country thanks to the established wink-and-a-nod way of doing business which has been tolerated for fifty years.

Your proximity to Chicago, the Dunes, the Railcats, all the converging rail lines and highways, the Gary Airport, your nearby institutions of higher learning....none of that means jack to businesses looking for competent elected officials and a workforce whose skills didn't become outdated by the early 1970's. Illinois taxes have been higher than NWI's for decades and that mass migration of companies you keep waiting for just doesn't materialize.

You'd think that just this once, the LC Dems, for the betterment of the county, could say something to the effect that, "sorry, we screwed up. It happens. Vote for the other guy just this once and we'll come back swinging in four years." Instead, the best the leader of the LC Dems could come up with was, "its my job to get Democrats elected." LC has to do everything right so the civilized world can begin to quit viewing it as the backwater it truly is. LC Dems have run out of "next times".

The Sunday, January 3, Editorial in the Times reads like a cry for political candidates to fight back against the corrupt Lake County Democrat patronage system that is bleeding Lake County individual and business taxpayers alike.

The Lake County GOP, whose leadership is above reproach, scored remarkable victories on November 2. The GOP victories bellowed out that there is an alternative to Democrat corruption. The demand for honest and competent Lake County elected officials is an idea that is taking hold.

And there is nothing on earth more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

The January 3 Times editorial reads:
County government should embrace tax freeze, live within new finanical boundaries

The numbers in Lake County clearly show a state-imposed levy freeze is helping taxpayers living here. Figures provided by the Lake County Council show the county's property owners saved $42.6 million in 2010 because of the levy freeze forced upon Lake County by state government. They're set to save another $64.9 million next year as a result of the freeze. That's all money that would have gone to the bottomless pit of Lake County government were it not for the freeze. It's a government spending diet long overdue in a county characterized by patronage indulgence.

But some elected officials in Lake County complain the leaner government coffers caused by the freeze threaten the operation of county government. Many of those officials are the same perennial officeholders who brought the wrath of the state to begin with by overspending year after year as if county taxpayers were their own personal mints. Some officials have even spoken of possible lawsuits against the state-imposed levy freeze — something that would be a futile waste of taxpayer money and fly in the face of what is fiscally right and responsible.

Though it has failed to transpire since the freeze was instated, a local option income tax remains one option for county officials to reclaim taxpayer money and prompt the state to thaw the levy freeze. But as they plan their course for the new year, Lake County officials must avoid this tactic if they care to do right by their constituents in what continue to be trying economic times. Adopting a local income tax to replace government funds lost through property tax caps or freezes would only prolong and enable the county's wasteful tendencies. Those attempting to loose weight by dieting don't achieve their goals if they replace the cupcakes they normally eat with sheet cake instead.

Many people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, work out, eat healthful and, in general, change their lifestyles for the better. Lake County government should resolve to do just that, living within the means of the levy freeze, cutting the dead and unnecessary weight that continues to abound and sticking to the same type of tight budget that most taxpayers face in their households these days.

Poll
Should Lake County government live within the levy freeze and cut more spending rather than adopting a local income tax?

It all goes back to Ted Kennedy getting Richard Hatcher elected as Mayor of Gary in 67.

An article in the Times on Sunday, January 2 by Bill Dolan reports on the efforts by Lake County Councilmen to evade the hiring freeze:

The article reports:

"Lake County Council members likely will remain the easygoing gatekeepers for anyone seeking county government jobs.

Council members voted last month to renew through the end of this year their authority to have the final word in filling most full-time job vacancies. They intend to reduce public spending by shrinking the county government payroll through attrition.

The hiring restrictions sound extreme on paper, but in practice county government remains a presence in the county's job market. Those newly elected taking office this week can hire chief deputies automatically. Judicial staffs, deputy prosecutors and a limited number of jobs mandated by state and federal law also are exempted.

Officials push through job hires by pitching them as essential to government services.

The council first called its policy a hiring freeze in June 2008 but changed its name last year. County Council President Tom O'Donnell, D-Highland, said council members got tired of reading headlines about liberal thaws in the hiring freeze.

Last month alone, the council approved nine of 10 hiring requests from the offices of the sheriff, treasurer, prosecutor and public defender less than two weeks after reduced tax revenues had forced 65 other government employees either into early retirement or to be laid off."

Crown Point is an excellent example of the results of Lake County Democrat corruption.

Uran was elected mayor of Crown Point after a vicious character assassination campaign against his far more qualified opponent Gayle Van Sessen.

Uran has run a pay-to-play administration that is running Crown Point down the toilet - with longtime businesses closing while stores and homes stand empty. Uran's idea of economic development is the Bo Jackson project.

Gayle Van Sessen, the Republican, has moved to Tipton, Indiana where as director of economic development she has landed a $500,000,000 solar panel plant for Tipton with 850 new jobs.

Gayle, the Republican, has always been scrupulously honest. Uran, the Democrat, is just the opposite

I was surprised to see that Crown Point financial consultant Greg Guerrettaz is paid about $30,000 whenever Crown Point issues a bond - at least twice in the last couple of years.

This is the guy who did the due diligence review and signed off on the Plasmatronics loan.

A lot of people think he should have been canned for that - not given more money

The Lake County Democrats are shameless in their corruption.

They are trying to undercut the funding for newly elected Republican, Hank Adams, Assessors office so Hank can't uncover and correct the extensive corruption that preceeded him.

The corrupt Lake County Democrats are a disgrace to Lake County and the State of Indiana in the eyes of God and Man.

There are two totally different cultures in Lake County.

Republican officeholders want to distinguish themselves by the quality of their service and the job they do. Hank Adams is a good example.

Democrat officeholders want to get as large a pot of money as they can under their control and then steal as much as possible. The leaders of Gary and East Chicago are good examples.

The Times 1/7/11 editorial calls for approval of an East Chicago Ethics ordinance

Said the editorial: "The culture of corruption in that city has lasted so long that confusion about those standards is understandable. Not right, but understandable. There have been too many bad role models."

Unfortunately, the East Chicago Democrat culture of corruption has spread.

Crown Point City Attorney Democrat David Nicholls was a prominent East Chicago attorney for Democrat David Pastrick, presently being sued for $100,000,000 and who has filed for bankruptcy.

The culture of Lake County Democrat corruption has spead like a cancer and taken hold in Crown Point.

The economic decline that has wasted East Chicago and Gary is now wasting Crown Point.
