LANSING -- The Lansing parents who police say attacked a 73-year-old crossing guard entered not guilty pleas to misdemeanor charges related to the incident at a court hearing this morning.

Darell Livingston, 26, and Shareka McKinney, 29, are charged with assault and battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor after the two were involved in a March 31 confrontation with cross guard James Thompson near the intersection of Teel Avenue and Riley Street. Thompson suffered a broken tooth as a result.

Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 93 days jail and/or a $500 fine.

Police say the two attacked Thompson after he broke up a fight between their 6-year-old son and a 7-year-old boy near the intersection. Police said the parents encouraged their son to attack the boy after the two were involved in a recess altercation at Lyons Elementary a day earlier.

Obviously, whatever problems that child has in school are the fault of his teacher.
