Woman’s bullets fell out of gun just before she tried to shoot cop
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES BY FRANK MAIN Staff Reporter

Image

Shandra Kidd didn’t realize her gun was empty when she tried to shoot a Chicago Police officer.

All the bullets fell out when she was running from the officer.

Unfortunately for her, the officer’s gun was loaded. And the officer shot her in the buttocks.

On Thursday, Kidd was sentenced to 55 years in prison for attempted murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

In May 2007, officers were investigating a report of shots fired near 78th and Burnham when they stopped a car Kidd was riding in. She ran and when an officer caught her, she stuck a gun in the officer’s chest and pulled the trigger.

But the gun didn’t go off.

The officer and Kidd struggled and they fell down. When they got up, she stuck the gun in the officer’s chest again and pulled the trigger.

Again, it didn’t go off.

That’s when the officer shot Kidd, 22, of the 7700 block of South Phillips.

Police later found that the cylinder of Kidd’s gun had opened during the chase and all the bullets fell out.

Cops: McDonald's boss punches mom with service dog
Associated Press, by Jeff Martin

ATLANTA (AP) — A McDonald's manager in the Atlanta area is accused of punching a mother after she brought her autistic children and a service dog inside the restaurant, authorities said.

Tiffany Denise Allen is charged with simple battery, simple assault and disorderly conduct, according to a Cobb County warrant.

Jennifer Schwenker entered the McDonald's in Marietta with her twins and service dog on July 12. Allen, who was off-duty at the time, became angry that the dog was inside, the warrant states. Police say Allen followed the mother around the restaurant, then punched her in the face in the parking lot.

Surveillance video shows McDonald's employees trying to restrain their co-worker, police wrote in the warrant.

Parents defend Atlanta school caught up in scandal
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, by Ty Tagami

Parents of students at an Atlanta public school where cheating was alleged to have occurred on a statewide test on Tuesday night defended their school and teachers at a town hall meeting. “We’ve been extremely pleased with the instruction my children have received,” said Quinnie Cook-Richardson, one of several parents at the troubled West Manor Elementary School who spoke at the meeting. Her son’s teacher had him reading within a year, she said, adding, “They are an example of what is right with Atlanta Public Schools.”

3 charged in Oak Lawn home invasion
Chicago Tribune

Image

A judge denied bail today for three men charged with shooting a woman during a home invasion in Oak Lawn.

Timmie Walton, 27, of the 3300 block of West 147th Street in Midlothian and two Chicago men -- Keon Thigpen, 22, of the 300 block of South Albany Avenue and Kennedy Clark, 50, of the 1200 block of South Lawndale Avenue -- each was charged with attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping and home invasion for an attack that took place early Wednesday in a house on the 10100 block of Buell Avenue in Oak Lawn, according to a police news release.

About 12:15 a.m. the three men -- along with a fourth suspect who still has not been arrested -- grabbed two women from a front porch and forced them into a rear entrance of the home, where a male relative of the women fired two shotgun rounds at the attackers but missed, police said.

A 24-year-old female homeowner was shot in the arm by one of the attackers before they fled, apparently without taking anything, police said. The woman was treated and released from Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

R. Kelly not controversial as Bud Billiken grand marshal

A man who admits he cannot read and famously beat child porn charges might not seem the most obvious honorary grand marshal of a children’s back-to-school parade.

But there was nothing but love for superstar R&B crooner R. Kelly at the Bud Billiken parade.

Families cheered for the 44-year-old Kelly — recently recovering from throat surgery — the entire parade route. His sexually-charged tunes blaring from a sound system, Kelly smiled and waved back.

“You’re still my baby, no matter what you did!” yelled one fan, Leslie Kaizer, 36.

Most parade-goers agreed, maintaining that charges Kelly filmed himself having sex with and urinating on a 14-year-old should have been forgotten in 2008 when jurors couldn’t be sure it was him on the infamous tape.

“Isn’t that what justice is in the United States?” Tiffany Levy, 38, a mother of two girls, asked.

As for his literacy problem, Kelly acknowledged it in 2009, telling an audience, “I don’t even read really, and I’m not afraid to say that. My cousins and brothers used to tease me ‘You can’t even read right.’” But his supporters Saturday said that didn’t harm his role at a pro-education event.

“He used his God-given talent,” Chris Bertram, 36, said. “That doesn’t mean he can’t tell the kids to go to school and do something he didn’t do.”

Kelly asked to participate in the parade, said Beverly “Earth Momma” Reed-Scott of Chicago Defender Charities. And while most celebrities “wave from a float and go home,” Kelly visited with youth whose training in green technologies is supported by the parade, Reed-Scott said.

There was, however, a small minority of unimpressed parade-goers.

“It doesn’t seem right,” said Gladys Sumerall, 55. “I don’t think I’d have picked him.”

[quote]GARY | A 68-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint Saturday night at a local South Shore Line station, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District police said.

The woman told NICTD police she was waiting about 11:46 p.m. Saturday inside Gary's Miller Beach South Shore station at U.S. 12 and Lake Street when a man attacked her.

The attack was recorded on parking lot security cameras, a NICTD news release states.

Police described the man as black, in his mid 20s and wearing a white T-shirt with black lettering on the front and back. He also was wearing white shorts and had a black handgun.

Footage shows the man riding away east from the station on a dark-colored BMX-style bicycle, police said.

The woman was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

From the Times.

Report: Lawmaker sought 'really good time' online

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS | Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday it's up to a married Republican state lawmaker and his constituents to decide whether he should step down over allegations he offered to pay a young man he met through Craigslist "for a really good time."

Quote:
Daniels said he is saddened by the news, and it's up to Hinkle and those he represents to determine whether he should step aside.
"It's not for me to say, it's between him and his constituents. It's just a personal, a family tragedy, and I'm sad about that," Daniels said.

Maybe it's more the way they talk. I went to a meeting today and some of the discussion was on styles of speech. There's things to say (and ways to say them) that are appropriate for home, some for friends, some for school, some for the business world. I understand Oprah called it "money talk".

500 witnesses and no one is talking
Philadelphia Inquirer, by Mike Newall

About 500 spectators were packed around the Kingsessing Recreation Center's outdoor basketball court Monday night, cheering on an adult league playoff game.

Then, at halftime, a thug in a red and black baseball hat loped across the court and fired a .40-caliber handgun 11 times into the bleachers, wounding six people.

As of Tuesday afternoon, none of those 500 witnesses were saying much to police.

So at an afternoon news conference, Mayor Nutter, flanked by Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey, and a dozen other police and city officials, stood on the still blood-spotted court and offered a $20,000 reward, imploring residents to come forward and identify the "coward" who shot up the game.

Christi police catch suspected robbery

Corpus Christi Caller.com, by John Allen

CORPUS CHRISTI — A man accused of stealing a cellphone from a teen at a bus stop was found thanks in part to his President Barack Obama T-shirt, Corpus Christi police said.

Officers were called to a convenience store in the 4300 block of Ayers Street at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday where a 16-year-old told them he was robbed while waiting at a nearby bus stop. The teen said a thin black man between 20-25 years old with short hair and wearing a black shirt with President Obama’s image, red shorts and black shoes threatened

Obama sticker led cops to shooting suspect
Boston Herald, by Christine McConville

A paroled killer’s “Obama” bumper sticker was the break that helped cops nab the man accused of the cold-blooded murder of a Tedeschi’s convenience store clerk

BREAK

At that time, Corliss, now 65, was on parole after serving part of a life sentence for killing a Salisbury store clerk in 1971. After the shocking 2009 execution, Devlin learned police were looking for a car exactly like his parolee’s and dropped the dime that led cops to Corliss. Police said security video images of the robber’s getaway car show the same Obama-touting vehicle.

These stickers are finally being put to good use...
