Chicago public school bans home-made lunches

To encourage healthful eating, Chicago school doesn't allow kids to bring lunches or certain snacks from home — and some parents, and many students, aren't fans of the policy

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

Feds sting Amish farmer
selling raw milk locally

Washington Times [DC], by Stephen Dinan

A yearlong sting operation, including aliases, a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and surreptitious purchases from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, culminated in the federal government announcing this week that it has gone to court to stop Rainbow Acres Farm from selling its contraband to willing customers in the Washington area. The product in question: unpasteurized milk. It’s a battle that’s been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it’s also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry

Govt urging food companies
to limit ads for kids

Associated Press, by Mary Clare Jalonick

WASHINGTON — The government is pressuring food companies to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to children, releasing guidelines Thursday that could phase out advertisements on television, in stores and on the Internet if companies agree to go along with them. Under the voluntary guidelines, companies would be urged to only market foods to children ages 2 through 17 if they are low in fats, sugars and sodium and contain specified healthy ingredients. The proposal sets parameters that are stricter than many companies have set for themselves. If companies agree, children could see much less

School lunches - my son took a lunch until this year. Yes, he's fussy, but I would rather send something for him to eat than have him throw away whatever the school sold him.

Republicans seem to confine their laws to non-digestive body systems and private bedrooms.

Sen. Schumer calls for Amtrak 'no
ride list' in wake of terror plot

NewsCore

Sen. Charles Schumer called today for the creation of a "No Ride List" for Amtrak trains to prevent suspected terrorists from targeting the US rail system. The move follows reports from intelligence gathered at Osama bin Laden's compound that showed al Qaeda was considering attacks on US trains. In a press conference at his New York City office, Schumer said he will begin pushing congressional appropriators to increase funding for track inspections of commuter and passenger rail systems, as well as heightened monitoring and support for security at local train stations throughout the country.

Kids Lemonade Stand At U.S. Open
Fined $500 And Shut Down By
Montgomery County

WUSA9, by Bruce Leshan

BETHESDA, Md. -- You can make a fortune selling parking spots outside the US Open, but don't even dream of setting up a lemonade stand. A county inspector ordered the Marriott and Augustine kids to shut down the stand they set up on Persimmon Tree Rd., right next to Congressional. And after they allegedly ignored a couple of warnings, the inspector fined their parents $500. "This gentleman from the county is now telling us because we don't have a vendors license, the kids won't be allowed to sell their lemonade," Carrie Marriott told us, her voice trembling.

Obama's Food Police in Staggering Crackdown on Market to Kids
Human Events, by Audrey Hudson

Tony the Tiger, some NASCAR drivers and cookie-selling Girl Scouts will be out of a job unless grocery manufacturers agree to reinvent a vast array of their products to satisfy the Obama administration’s food police. Either retool the recipes to contain certain levels of sugar, sodium and fats, or no more advertising and marketing to tots and teenagers, say several federal regulatory agencies. The same goes for restaurants. It’s not just the usual suspected foods that are being targeted, such a thin mint cookies sold by scouts or M&Ms and Snickers, which sponsor cars in the Sprint Cup,

USDA Secretary: We Must

for What Americans Eat

Cybercast News Service, by Penny Starr

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told members of the National Restaurant Association on Monday that Americans need to
“adjust” their tastes so that they like the kind of food the government believes they should eat—and “we have to make sure that what we do is create the appropriate transition.” “You know, as we deal with this issue of reducing sodium and sugar, it sounds simple to do, but you all know better than I do, it’s not as simple as it sounds,” said Vilsack. “It’s going to take time for people’s taste to adjust and

According to the democrats, you can decide whether or not to kill your baby before it's born, but no say so on what to feed it...

Bloomberg’s pro-breast-feeding
initiative to lock away baby
formula at 27 hospitals

New York Post, by Mary Kay Linge

The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

Kids begin brown-bag boycott
of healthier school menus

KMSP-TV [Eden Prairie, MN], by Rob Olson

A movement protesting new federal guidelines for healthy school lunches that began in Pennsylvania has spread to Minnesota, where hundreds of students are now bringing brown bags in a boycott of the new menu.

Starting this year, there are strict limits on calories, sodium and meat portions. Whole milk is off the menu altogether, and kids are required to take a fruit or vegetable. As parents with fussy eaters might guess, some student's aren't salivating over those options.

In the halls of Rockford High School, a food fight over some simple things -- cookies, condiments and milk -- has started taking off after seniors Adam Anderson and Zach Guthrie set up a Facebook group encouraging a brown bag boycott.

Bags were prepared in advance, bearing messages like, "Where's the ranch?" and "We want our cookies." By Thursday, the school served about 150 fewer lunches than it had the day before, and students promise the movement will only continue to grow even though there may be no resolution.

Students Must Choose Fruits,
Veggies for Reduced School-
Lunch Price to Apply

Cybercast News Service, by Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - Elementary students in Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools are now "required to select a serving of fruit or vegetables as part of their lunch," the school system's website says.

The new "All Star Lunch" program," based on new federal nutrition standards, aims to teach students about the five "star" components of a healthy lunch: protein, grains, milk, fruits, and vegetables.

"Elementary school students who purchase lunch may select three, four, or all five of the stars and will be required to select a serving of fruit or vegetables as part of their lunch," the Fairfax County Public Schools website says. "At least three stars must be selected for the school lunch price to apply."

Selecting only two stars triggers a-la-carte pricing.

Texas school district to
require students to wear
RFID chip while on campus

American Thinker, by Lee DeCovnick

A school district in San Antonio, Texas is requiring middle and high school students to wear a "tracking" chip while on campus. And not just a passive RFID (Radio-frequency identification) chip, these second generation RFID chips include a battery that transmits a radio signal for constant location monitoring of the students. District spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said, "Chip readers on campuses and on school buses can detect a student's location but can't track them once they leave school property. Only authorized administrative officials will have access to the information."

Yea, right.

From the San Antonio Times, May 12, 2012 we read:

Northside Independent School District plans to track students next year on two of its campuses using technology implanted in their student identification cards in a trial that could eventually include all 112 of its schools and all of its nearly 100,000 students.

Northside, the largest school district in Bexar County, plans to modify the ID cards next year for all students attending John Jay High School, Anson Jones Middle School and all special education students who ride district buses. That will add up to about 6,290 students.
