That's what the rampaging, villainous mob of black youths who attacked white victims at the Wisconsin State Fair were looking for.

The back-story: in early August the Wisconsin State Fair opened in the town of West Allis, which is pretty darned near Milwaukee. The first night, a fight broke out. According to some news reports, the initial fisticuffs involved black youths fighting black youths.

Somewhere along the line, some of the young combatants took the notion to make the fracas an interracial thing. Some young blacks started attacking whites. It seemed like a repeat of some incidents in Chicago a couple of months ago and, though not as publicized, in Baltimore a few years back when bands of black youths attacked white tourists near the city's famous Inner Harbor.

Many have asked what inspired this spate of black-on-white mob attacks. The most obvious answer is the one we don't want to mention.

Plain, simple racism.

I don't know what else to call it when mobs of blacks single out whites to attack. But there still exists this notion that blacks can't be racists. Racism requires power, the thinking goes. Since blacks have no power, they can't be racists.

Such nonsense is bad enough when left-wing loonies and Black Nationalist types parrot it. But the Rev. Jesse Jackson is a prominent black leader. He, at least, should know better.

Alas, he does not.

"At that point the girl in front was already five feet off me."

The pack then attacked the woman.

"Stealing is a very normal thing at convenience stores," one employee said. "It happens every day -- morning, evening, night. But such kind of thing I have never seen before."

Store employees said this was the third such incident at the store in the past couple of weeks, and that if the trend continues, the 24-hour store will have to close at night.

They were standing on his steps. One shouted, " 'Something's going to happen now!' " LaVelle recalled in an interview Friday at his house. LaVelle got nervous and went back inside, locking his door with a deadbolt.

But the attackers pounded on his front windows and kicked his wooden door so hard, it flew open and some of them entered his house.

"The first guy hits me with a pipe. The second guy knocks me in the face. All I'm hearing is my wife and kids screaming," said LaVelle, who feared that the next time they saw him, he would be in a casket.

He said that he was able to push the attackers out the door, but then a third man - who had a gun - tried to extend his arm. LaVelle grabbed onto the gunman's lower arm and shoulder so he couldn't raise the weapon. Then, police sirens screamed in the neighborhood, and the mob turned and ran.

There, I've said it. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake won't be happy with that assessment. Nor, probably, will Baltimore City Council President Bernard Young and other elected officials.

But I'm not the one they have to sell on how safe Baltimore is for white tourists. That poor white guy in the now-notorious video that's gone viral is.

His name isn't known. Police have only identified him as a tourist from Arlington. According to news reports based on what the man told Baltimore police, he had left a downtown nightclub after drinking and found himself standing in front of the Mitchell Courthouse.

There's a certain, cruel irony in the site of this incident. The courthouse is named after Clarence Mitchell Jr., a Baltimore civil rights icon who was very influential in the civil rights movement. His work as an NAACP lobbyist on civil rights legislation earned him the nickname "the 101st Senator."

Mitchell was one of the most dignified people who ever lived. The white tourist who found himself in front of Mitchell Courthouse in the early hours of March 18 soon found himself surrounded by a most undignified group of black people.
