Obama-tied Amonix Inc lays
off most of company

Some of President Barack Obama’s top donors and fundraising bundlers are partners in Amonix Inc., the latest Solyndra-like corporate crash. The company has announced a layoff of 200 workers — two-thirds of its workforce — despite a federal green-technology tax credit of $5.9 million in 2010.

The investors include John Doerr’s venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Daniel Weiss’ Angeleno Group LLC and Steve Westly’s eponymous Westly Group, according to Amonix’s website.

These three investors have also invested heavily in Obama and other Democrats — and the president’s aides are now trying to minimize the political damage.

According to a database maintained by the Center for Responsive Politics, Doerr has donated $171,900 since 2008. Weiss has donated $26,480 and Westly has donated $181,250. Nearly all of those contributions went to Democrats.

And the whole point of it is to depress you and dispirit you, like the unemployment numbers looking magical now, Obama's approval numbers looking magical now, the Republicans look like blithering idiots now.

WASHINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) — Winning The Future. Greater Together. We Don’t Quit.

They may not be official but those are all phrases that could in one form or another be candidates to become President Barack Obama’s re-election slogan.

Advisers say a fresh slogan to replace the winning “Change we can believe in” mantra of 2008, is unlikely to appear before Obama knows who his Republican opponent will be and starts big campaign travel swings, likely in the spring or summer.

His campaign posters now say simply, “Obama 2012.”

But Obama’s surrogates have roadtested some slogans in recent months, including “Winning The Future,” which the White House used to promote its budget, and “Greater Together,” which the campaign has used to brand its youth outreach effort.

A new tagline will have to reflect a new reality.

Obama is no longer a Washington outsider, unemployment is falling but still high, and economic insecurity for many voters is a huge concern that a simple slogan cannot overcome.

Obama is aware of that difficulty. He still refers to his old slogan at campaign fundraisers, emphasizing the “change” he has achieved, while dropping lines that could be test runs for a pitch to convince voters to give him another term.

This year’s Index of Dependence on Government presented startling findings about the sharp increase of Americans who rely on the federal government for housing, food, income, student aid or other assistance.

Another eye-popping number was the percentage of Americans who don’t pay income taxes, which now accounts for nearly half of the U.S. population. Meanwhile, most of that population receives generous federal benefits.

President Obama does not “accept responsibility” for high gas prices, his spokesman indicated today, arguing that Obama has done everything he could to bring down the price of oil and blaming the high gas prices on oil price increases caused by global factors.

“The president accepts the responsibility that he identified the next president should accept, which is the need for comprehensive energy policy,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today when asked if Obama “accept[s] responsibility” for the high price of oil and gas. “If you’re suggesting that there is responsibility for a rise in the price of oil, it’s certainly not because of anything he hasn’t done to expand oil production,” Carney added.

President Barack Obama has an emerging slogan — “greater together” — that he’s using to spur support among younger voters worried about jobs, education and debt.

The collectivist slogan is appearing in more places, including fundraisers and in the title of the “Greater Together Student Summit Tour,” which is sending Obama’s deputies to colleges to galvanize students and youth.

On Feb. 1, Obama used the slogan to spur support among young and old African-Americans, and especially African-American women.

Less than half of younger African-American men are in the workforce, and the average wealth of African-American families was slashed by the collapse of the government-caused mortgage bubble.

Previous generations of African-Americans “made it possible for someone like me to be here today. … We are greater together than we can ever be on our own,” he said in a short video posted on his campaign website.

President Barack Obama told a group of contributors at a campaign fundraiser in Florida on Thursday that his term so far has been “three of the toughest years this country has gone through in my lifetime.”

“We’ve gone through three of the toughest years this country has gone through in my lifetime,” Obama said, according to the White House transcript of his remarks.

“And there are a lot of people who are still hurting all across the country–a lot of people here in Florida, a lot of people everywhere,” said Obama. “There are still folks whose homes are underwater because the housing market collapsed. There are people who are still struggling because they can’t find a job. There are folks who are just barely able to make ends meet. And obviously those of us who are here, we’ve been incredibly blessed. But one of the great things about America and one of the great things about those who are in professional sports is we’ve all got cousins, uncles, family members who are still struggling and are a reminder that we have a lot more work to do.”
