Michelle Obama Tops Nielsen Ratings…

… which means that she flat out kicked Ann Romney’s butt in the ratings game. Mitt didn’t have such a hot rating night either. In fact, the RNC overall was down while the Democrats were up.

The Nielsen Co. said about 26.2 million people watched the opening night of the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., where the first lady was the featured speaker.

Last week, Nielsen said 22.3 million watched the first night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., where potential first lady Ann Romney talked about her husband, Mitt.

More people watched the DNC convention on network TV (non-political junkies) this Tuesday than last:

Clinton’s speech Wednesday night in Charlotte peaked at 22,087 tweets per minute, while Michelle Obama peaked at 28,003 TPM on Tuesday, according to Twitter. Clinton did do better on Twitter than Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who reached just 14,289 TPM last week at the Republican National Convention.

Democratic convention beats football in ratings

NEW YORK — The second night of the Democratic National Convention beat the Republicans in television ratings and, perhaps more impressively, beat pro football.

An estimated 25.1 million people watched the convention between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, when former President Bill Clinton delivered an impassioned nomination speech for President Barack Obama, the Nielsen ratings company said.

During that hour, just over 20 million people were watching the second half of the Dallas Cowboys' season-opening victory over the New York Giants. Faced with competition from Clinton, ratings for football's first game were down from the past two years.

The second night of the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., last week, featuring vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, was seen by 21.9 million people, Nielsen said Thursday.

Democratic convention ratings held up well compared to 2008, when interest was particularly high. The Democrats had a four-day convention then, with 25.9 million viewers on the second day and 24 million on the third. None of those nights faced competition from pro football.

The entire football game was seen by an average of 23.9 million people on NBC, Nielsen said. Last year's opening game was seen by 27.1 million, and 2010's game had a record 27.5 million. The opening game generally features the Super Bowl champion from the year before.

Competition among the TV networks televising the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday was about as tight as polls show the presidential race between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

ABC had the biggest audience, with 4.59 million viewers. CBS had 4.41 million, MSNBC had 4.39 million, CNN had 4.13 million, PBS had 4.1 million and Fox News Channel had 3.1 million, Nielsen said.

Overall, the speech attracted around 11 million viewers on the three broadcast networks. That’s about 400,000 fewer viewers than watched Ann Romney’s speech. But, the really bad news for Obama is the massive drop in viewers from 2008.

Internal emails between senior officials at The Gallup Organization, obtained by The Daily Caller, show senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod attempting to subtly intimidate the respected polling firm when its numbers were unfavorable to the president.

After Gallup declined to change its polling methodology, Obama’s Department of Justice hit it with an unrelated lawsuit that appears damning on its face.

TheDC is withholding the identities of the Gallup officials to protect them from potential retaliation from Obama’s campaign and his administration.

In April, Axelrod tweeted that a poll showing Mitt Romney with a 48-43 percent lead over Obama was “saddled with some methodological problems,” directing his Twitter followers to read a National Journal story criticizing Gallup polls showing a Romney lead.

In that National Journal piece, Ron Brownstein wrote that the polls showing Romney leading the president had “a sample that looks much more like the electorate in 2010 than the voting population that is likely to turn out in 2012.”

Politico is blaming this on Obama's strict adherence to the "politics of 2012" -- "a race that has been defined by relentless, almost mechanical efforts to motivate voters with narrow appeals to specific constituencies and to destroy the opposition as a credible alternative."

Such may be the case, especially since for the first time in 30 years, a sitting president had absolutely no case to make for his own re-election. Even rhetorically (forget the delivery) the speech fell flat. It was like giving a sports report and not mentioning the scores.

Many on the left were more than disappointed:

According to the pool report, the official said the campaign conducted research on the various speeches "and I think the American people responded very well to the president's speech."

"They first of all found it to be optimistic, they found it to be credible in terms of his ideas and goals that would help the economy," said the Obama adviser, adding that their research indicated positive reaction on Obama's discussion of foreign policy.

The reaction among even many progressive commentators was less effusive.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa defended his performance during a platform kerfuffle at the Democratic National Convention this week, saying that he took the actions called for by President Obama and followed procedure when Democrats realized they had left the words “God” and “Jerusalem” out of the party platform.

Such a change requires a two-thirds vote by delegates, and on Wednesday they were asked to approve language invoking God and affirming Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Villaraigosa, the convention chairman, called for a voice vote three times before declaring the amendments approved. Some delegates and journalists on the convention floor at the Time Warner Cable Arena were adamant that one could not audibly be certain they heard two-thirds of the delegates present say “aye.”

“It was a lot of ado about nothing,” the mayor said Friday. Villaraigosa said that when reporters told him after the vote that they did not clearly hear two-thirds support, he responded, “That’s nice to know. I was the chairman and I did, and that was the prerogative of the chair.”

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who served as the co-chair of the Democratic platform committee, said on Sunday that leaving the word “God” out of the party’s platform was merely “an error of omission.”

Dismissing claims that Democrats are anti-religion, Booker said criticizing the party for the omission was a “cheap shot.”

“At the end of the day, people look at the platform before (with words like) ‘faith,’ ‘religion,’ ‘clergy’—all of that was in there. All of those words were in there,” he said on ABC’s This Week. “It was an error of omission.”

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., challenged Booker on the optics of Democratic delegates booing convention chairman Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, during a revote of the platform to add the word “God” and language recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The language was added, over the objection of some vocal delegates in the convention hall.

“When the images are of people booing God, that’s a tough image to overcome,” Paul said.

Booker refuted Paul, however, saying the fact that President Obama intervened in the process shows a positive image of leadership.

Over the past two weeks, politicians at both the Democratic and Republican conventions spoke of health care policy, taxation and every other hot-button issue under the sun.

They also, it turns out, talked about themselves. A lot.

Using the transcripts produced by Federal News Service, POLITICO examined the speeches of the conventions’ most prominent speakers and counted the number of instances the following words were employed: “I,” “I’ve,” “I’m,” “I’ll,” “my,” “mine” and “me.”

The results? Joe Biden took first place by a wide margin. With his primetime — and personal — speech, the vice president racked up 135 mentions of himself. He was followed by first lady Michelle Obama, with 112. Mitt Romney took top honors among Republicans with 91 mentions of himself, as compared to 103 for his opponent, President Barack Obama.
