Anger over AIG bonuses depletes president's political capital
Washington Post

President Obama's apparent inability to block executive bonuses at insurance giant AIG has dealt a sharp blow to his young administration and is threatening to derail both public and congressional support for his ambitious political agenda. Politicians in both parties flocked to express outrage over $165 million in bonuses paid out to executives at the company, demanding answers from the president and swamping Monday's rollout of his efforts to spark lending to small businesses.

Why tax problems have plagued Team Obama
DC Examiner

It’s been a recurring question about the young Obama administration: Why have so many of its nominees come down with tax problems? Timothy Geithner, Tom Daschle, Ron Kirk, Nancy Killefer, and a number of others who didn’t make it to the nomination stage — all have been felled, or tainted, by unpaid tax bills ranging from a few hundred dollars to more than $140,000.

You know I've noticed that. They're either holding their tongues or the media has a partially deaf ear to their objections.

Actually, it was DEMOCRAT Senator Dodd who made sure the language was in the final bill passed that gave AIG the money and allowed them to use it for bonuses. Interestingly enough, DEMOCRAT Senator Dodd was the single largest recipient of campaign donations from AIG during the last election cycle.

Go figure...... :smt005 :smt006

Amid AIG Furor, Dodd Tries to Undo Bonus Protections He Put In
Some Details About AIG's Bonuses Are Revealed

Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) on Monday night floated the idea of taxing American International Group (AIG: 0.95, 0.1699, 21.78%) bonus recipients so the government could recoup some or all of the $450 million the company is paying to employees in its financial products unit. Within hours, the idea spread to both houses of Congress, with lawmakers proposing an AIG bonus tax.

The move represents somewhat of an about-face for the Senator.

While the Senate was constructing the $787 billion stimulus last month, Dodd added an executive-compensation restriction to the bill. That amendment provides an “exception for contractually obligated bonuses agreed on before Feb. 11, 2009” -- which exempts the very AIG bonuses Dodd and others are now seeking to tax.

The amendment made it into the final version of the bill, and is law.

Separately, Sen. Dodd was AIG’s largest single recipient of campaign donations during the 2008 election cycle with $103,100, according to opensecrets.org.

Dodd’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Is that the same bill that the Republicans in Congress opposed..?

The one that the Democrats wrote and had pushed into law..?

The one that Obama said was essential to our economy.../

That bill....?

I love this game. Thanks for playing.

Once again this is a case where partisanship gets in the way of actually getting anything done. Another situation where both sides dropped the ball. Another situation where playing politics continues to screw us. Another situation where leaving decision making in the hands of people who need political support does not cover the best interests of the US citizens.

Terms preventing them from giving bonuses was omitted in the original bailout. One that was heavily negotiated by Paulson and Geithner. A mistake the taxpayers are going to pay dearly for.

But our lawmakers are now throwing the markets back into financial turmoil by making threats that we are now going to let AIG go under over $150 Million in Bonuses. We have given them now close to $180 BILLION and we are going to let it all go away over a $150 Million Dollar Mistake? Thats .1 % of the money we have given them. So we are going to just send $180 BILLION into a black hole over .1%?

Instead it's time for the US Government to Man Up and show executive control over a company we basically OWN. The understanding should have been made immediately that they have the decision of taking their bonuses and clearing out their desks, or forgoing their bonuses and keeping their jobs. It is time for us to get involved in protecting OUR interests in the stakes we have taken in these companies instead of threatening to push them out of business.
