Another tale of government-run health-care success
posted at 8:48 am on March 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How will our health-care system run once the government is in charge of it? People who have VA or Medicare already know the answer to that — and so do the people of Canada, whose model received warm praise from Barack Obama and leading Democrats early in the ObamaCare campaign. The Toronto Sun reports the story of Kent Pankow, whose brain cancer spread while their medical system tried to decide whether surgery fit within their comparative effectiveness models, and who ended up here in Minnesota in an effort to save his life. Now Canada won’t fill his prescription for a drug that they supply for other patients (via Newsalert):

Quote:
Kent Pankow lives in Edmonton, in a province and a country that is trying to either kill him or bankrupt him.
No sense mincing words.
Suffering from brain cancer, Kent Pankow was literally forced to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. for lifesaving surgery — at a cost to family and friends of $106,000 — after the health-care system in Alberta left him hanging in bureaucratic limbo for 16 crucial days, his tumour meanwhile migrating to an unreachable part of the brain, while it dithered over his case file, ultimately deciding he was not surgery worthy.
Now, with the Mayo Clinic having done what the Alberta Cancer Board wouldn’t authorize or even explain, but with the tumour unable to be totally removed, the province will now not fund the expensive drug, Avastin, that the Mayo prescribed to keep him alive and keep the remaining tumour from increasing in size — despite the costs of the drug being totally funded by the province for other forms of cancer.
Kent Pankow, as it turns out, has the right disease but he has it in the wrong place.
Had he lung cancer, breast cancer, or colon cancer, then the cost of the drug — $4,555 per treatment, two times a month — would be totally covered by Alberta’s version of OHIP.

Shocking poll: Canadians happy with health care
I try not to write about health care all the time, but since the Canadian system keeps coming up as a bogey man south of the border, I feel obligated to set the record straight when I can.
Today's Globe and Mail contains news of a survey that says Canadians are quite happy with the care they receive:
"The largest survey on primary health care ever conducted in Canada found that most people have high praise for their family doctor, and a staggering 92 per cent would recommend their physician to a relative or friend."
As I've said before, that has certainly been my experience in the two years I have lived here.
Americans interested in Canadian health care might like to watch and share this video. Jack Layton, leader of the federal New Democratic Party, points out in an MSNBC interview that not even the most conservative parties here advocate dismantling the health care system. Something to think about.

Canadians are (gasp!) happy with their health care system, and don’t want ours
August 3, 2009 by Mark Tokarski

By over a ten to one margin, Canadians prefer their own health care system over ours (82%-8%). 70% of them are either fairly satisfied, or very satisfied with the system.

These are the results of a Harris/Decima poll published on July 5.

It points out an interesting phenomenon – if you asked any typical conservative, he would tell you that Canadians are plagued by waiting queues and flood down here to the states for fancy American medical care. They aren’t, and they don’t.

But most Americans have limited access to information about health care in other countries. The British, the French, Taiwanese, Canadians and Cubans — all of them all the way down the line don’t want our system. But here in this country information is filtered, and we only hear of unhappy Canucks and Brits. I( doubt that the above survey gained a mention on any American TV network, and damned few newspapers.

Of course there are problems in each of these countries, and conservatives, who know very little of their systems, are quick to point out the problems. Canadians do have waiting queues for some non-critical procedures. That’s a big complaint up there, but not so much that they want to sacrifice their system for ours. The British system is underfunded. Cuba is poor, and cannot afford expensive technology. But according to WHO, each is doing better than the US in delivering care.

By the way, Canada’s health system is run at the provincial level, and the worst-performing province is Quebec. This is where most complaints about their system originate.

BBBWWWWHAHHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHA

What an idiot and so is Mark Tokarski (whoever in the hell that is... )

Americans are happy with their healthcare but Liar540 and his ilk insist we swallow their socialism just so they can control our lives and feel better about themselves.

Typical.

So what? As I remember, the "for profit" health care hasn't worked out real well for your family.

What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”

Flashback: Donald Berwick “We Must Redistribute Wealth”

Today, President Obama officially made Donald Berwick his recess appointment to be the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
In a 2008 while speaking on the British health care system in the UK, Berwick said wealthy individuals must redistribute their wealth to those less fortunate for health care funding. Also during this speech, he told those in attendance that he opposes free markets.
“Any health care funding plan that is just equitable civilized and humane must, must redistribute wealth from the richer among us to the poorer and the less fortunate. Excellent health care is by definition redistributional.”

Frustrated Swedish man sews up his own leg after long ER wait

A 32-year-old took the needle into his hands when he tired of the wait at Sundsvall hospital in northern Sweden and sewed up the cut in his leg himself. The man was later reported to the police for his impromptu handiwork.

"It took such a long time," the man told the local Sundsvall Tidning daily.

The man incurred the deep cut when he sliced his leg on the sharp edge of a kitchen stove while he was renovating at home.

"I first went to the health clinic, but it was closed. So I rang the medical help line and they told me that it shouldn't be closed, so I went to emergency and sat there," the man named only as Jonas told the newspaper.

After an hour-long wait in a treatment room, he lost patience and proceeded to sew up his own wound.

"They had set out a needle and thread and so I decided to take the matter into my hands," he said.

But hospital staff were not as impressed by his initiative and have reported the man on suspicion of arbitrary conduct for having used hospital equipment without authorization.
