Fox News' Shep Smith bucked his network's conservative ideology by taking on Republicans who are pressing Obama on Iraq.

"Are we about to be drawn back into a conflict in Iraq?" Smith asked. "The same people who 12 years ago told us this will be quick, this will be easy, this will be inexpensive, they will see us as liberators, it's the right thing to do, are now telling us, 'It's the right thing to do.' What's the endgame? Who's thought this through?"

On Monday at the State Department daily briefing, spokeswoman Jen Psaki declined to say that Islamic extremists are on the march, in light of al Qaeda affiliate ISIS invasion of Iraq as an attempt to establish a “caliphate.

When asked directly if terrorism is on the rise Psaki replied, “I wouldn’t put it in those terms.” The reporter then pointed to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, saying earlier this year that “Al Qaeda has metastasized,” and is gaining strength in several dangerous regional of the world. Psaki replied by offering the reporter a copy of the State Department’s terror assessment report.

The last American commander in Iraq recommended to the Obama administration that 23,000 U.S. troops remain to cement the victory, but no deal was ever reached with Baghdad, and all combat forces went home.

That stalemate has come back to haunt the country as al Qaeda-linked extremists, who had been defeated by 2011, have returned to Iraq in a terrorist campaign to capture huge swaths of territory in northern and western areas.

The extremists, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS, for Syria), are threatening Baghdad and could be on the verge of creating an enormous terrorist state that menaces the world.

Retired ArmyGen. John M. Keane, who advised commanders in Iraq and helped devise the 2007 troop surge, remembers how the U.S. achieved victory by working hand in hand with Iraq’s military to conduct pinpoint strikes. The effort was so effective that the enemy, al Qaeda in Iraq, stopped sending killers into Iraq because they would be exterminated quickly.

In December 2011, the U.S. military left, led by ArmyGen. Lloyd J. Austin III, who now heads U.S. Central Command and is studying options for helping Baghdad survive absent U.S. combat troops.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is suggesting that the US go back into this mess that Obama caused by pulling all the troops out.

But you can rest assured that Obama will continue to flush Billions of US Taxpayer dollars down the drain on this problem his foreign policy cased, as he will on the southwestern border that another of his foreign policy caused.

Iraq’s Government, Not Obama, Called Time on the U.S. Troop Presence

But ending the U.S. troop presence in Iraq was an overwhelmingly popular demand among Iraqis, and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki appears to have been unwilling to take the political risk of extending it. While he was inclined to see a small number of American soldiers stay behind to continue mentoring Iraqi forces, the likes of Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, on whose support Maliki’s ruling coalition depends, were having none of it. Even the Obama Administration’s plan to keep some 3,000 trainers behind failed because the Iraqis were unwilling to grant them the legal immunity from local prosecution that is common to SOF agreements in most countries where U.S. forces are based.

WASHINGTON POST EXCERPT: Speaking at TechShop in Pittsburgh, Pa., President Obama praised U.S. Special Operations forces for “showing incredible courage and precision” in capturing Abu Khattala, who Obama said “is alleged to have been one of the masterminds” of the Benghazi attacks.

“He is now being transported back to the United States,” Obama said.

“We continue to think about and pray for the families of those who were killed during that terrible attack,” the president added. “But more importantly, it’s important for us to send a message to the world that when Americans are attacked, no matter how long it takes, we will find those responsible, and we will bring them to justice. And that’s a message I sent the day after it happened, and regardless of how long it takes, we will find you.”

President Obama receives low marks for his handling of the situation in Iraq: just 37 percent approve, and 52 percent disapprove. While most Democrats approve, nearly a third of them disapproves.

Moreover, more than two-thirds of Americans do not think Mr. Obama has clearly explained what the U.S. goals are in Iraq. Among members of his own party, more say the president hasn’t explained U.S. goals than say he has.

So the Republican Party has once again proven to be the unapologetic, barefaced, shameless, lying embarrassment to America, as they have been since their campaign to sabotage this Presidency.

The Party of Lincoln is dead. There will never be another Republican President.
