Crown Point schools should learn to do more with less

On Tuesday, voters will get to choose to have their property taxes raised in Crown Point to fund the School system. Yes, the Crown Point schools have performed well over the years but they have spent money at times like a drunken sailor.

Case in point, when they built the new high school, they had a wonderful football facility with natural grass. They later replaced that beautiful natural grass field with artificial turf. Was that a necessary expense?

How many other wastes have there been? The school system that makes decisions like that then asks me to pay an extra $200 a year? I will be voting a big no. Maybe we should cut back on the number of administrators. Have any of them offered to take a salary reduction?

Perhaps some of the sports can become pay to play. How much is spent on athletics? Granted, sports are a big part of the experience, but how many of these young athletes are ever able to make a living playing sports? It's such a small percentage, how can such large amounts of money justify the expenses? Maybe the schools should learn to turn a profit on athletic activities.

Either way, Crown Point's school system needs to adjust its expenditures and focus on the needs of the majority of students and learn to do more with less.
