CROWN POINT | A 35-year-old city tradition will be tweaked this year in the form of a new location.

The Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce's Hometown Square Festival will move its arts and crafts show and the Taste of Crown Point from its previous location on the old courthouse lawn to South Main Street, south of Joliet Street, the chamber's Executive Director Gayle Van Sessen announced Tuesday.

"The Lake Court House Foundation put so many restrictions on the lawn. ... We decided it was impossible to have (it) on the lawn," Van Sessen said. "This was the only real solution."

Marty Wheeler, the president of Lake Court House Foundation Inc., said she received a note from Van Sessen that the festival would not be at the old courthouse this year. She said in 2007 the lawn was so filled with tents and electric lines that the foundation didn't feel it was safe, and restrictions were put on the use of the lawn last year.

"It's our fiduciary responsibility to keep (the courthouse) in good condition and to keep it safe," Wheeler said.

Van Sessen said it was important to the chamber to keep the festival downtown, and while it considered hosting the events at Wheeler Middle School, that seemed too far away from the downtown square. She said having it on the street instead of on the old courthouse lawn will make it a little more uncomfortable and won't be quite as pretty.

"The whole point of the event is to bring people downtown," Van Sessen said. "By having it here so many years it's added to the charm of the community."

The annual corn roast will be June 19 in its usual location. The arts and crafts show and the Taste of Crown Point will be in the new locations, but the dates of the events will remain the same, the third and fourth weekends in June, respectively.

Leave it up to Marty "Whose the fairest of them all" to try and ruin the festival. What a spiteful old witch. Why doesn't she retire already?
