New restaurants on Crown Point's menu

Sandwich shop owners believe economy's hurting more upscale places

CROWN POINT | Two local restaurant owners have found new homes in two of Crown Point's commercial corridors.

The Crown Point location of Lincoln's Carryout has moved from Summit Street to North Main Street, giving the sandwich shop better exposure, said owner Scott Underwood.

"We'll be more noticeable for families," Underwood said. "Summit Street isn't really a place you're searching for food."

The restaurant formerly leases space adjacent to Buddy & Pal's bar. The new location, 1203 N. Main St., will have much the same menu, but it will no longer offer pizza.

Underwood said the new location was ideal for the restaurant because of the number of other restaurants along the street, and that the building had previously operated as a restaurant; it used to be Papa Murphy's pizza.

He expects the new store to open before the end of the month.

Further along Main Street in Crown Point's downtown, Mr. Greek Gyros will open a Crown Point location, likely in November.

Already with Merrillville and Valparaiso locations, owner Alexander Gagianas, said he lives in Crown Point and decided the downtown was "the right place." The 107 N. Main St. site formerly housed The Coffee Cup. Gagianas said a muralist will paint Bulldog related murals in the restaurant, paying homage to the city's high school.

"A good gyro place is needed in Crown Point," he said.

Although a slow economy has some businesses worried, Gagianas said he's not worried about opening a new location because he believes his prices and the food are good.

"I think the economy's hurting more upscale places. Not a place where you can get a couple of hot dogs and a fry for $3.99."

Papa's Deli dropped the ball a decade ago. I'm glad to see some new blood give it a try.

Now all we need is a good Vienna Beef place in CP like Simon Says or Arman's.
