C.P. council gives inital OK for rezone of 40-acre parcel at I-65

CROWN POINT | The proposed rezoning for business of 40 acres of former farm land near Interstate 65 won preliminary City Council approval Monday.

Final approval could come in April.

The acreage, west of the interstate between 109th and 113th avenues, would be suitable for hotels, restaurants and other commercial uses should it win rezoning, a representative of owner Mark Kendra told Crown Point officials earlier.

Councilman Bill Feder, D-at large, held out against the rezoning, repeating the objection he'd voiced as a Plan Commission member in February.

"I felt the property should be a business park," continuing the light industrial zoning of the Crown East industrial park west of the 40 acres, Feder said.

"We already have an abundance of (business zoned) land, but we're lacking in industrial," Feder said.

An ordinance granting the rezone passed on first reading Monday in a 5-1 vote, with Feder voting against it.

The Plan Commission in February voted 5-1 in favor of recommending rezoning the land for business, with Feder again the holdout.

Jim Wieser, the lawyer representing Kendra, told the Plan Commission in February that business development is faring better than industrial development in the slowly recovering economy.

Definite plans for developing the property are not yet in place, Wieser said earlier.

Two other tracts of land at the I-65 and 109th Avenue intersection have been rezoned for business within the past year, including 130 acres on the west side of the intersection and 40 acres on the east side.

Does anyone know what is the situation with the road work on South St.? They have dug out 2 foot ditches on both sides of the road from Indiana Ave. to West St.
