INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service says
it plans to study the possible closure of mail processing centers in some of Indiana’s largest cities, including Gary, South Bend, Terre Haute, Lafayette and BloomingtonThe postal service said Thursday it
will look at consolidating the operations of as many as five regional centers into Indianapolis. Those five centers are in Bloomington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Muncie and Terre Haute. It says it also will look at consolidating the Terre Haute operations in Evansville, South Bend’s with Fort Wayne, and Gary’s in Bedford Park, Ill.The postal service expects to complete the studies early next year.
The studies come as the postal service aims to increase efficiency and improve productivity amid shrinking mail volume. First-class mail is down 25 percent over five years nationwide.
