Etta James, whose assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as "The Wallflower," "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and the wedding favorite "At Last," has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73. She died from complications from leukemia with her husband, Artis Mills, and her sons by her side, De Leon said. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, and also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. James died at a hospital in Riverside, California. She would have turned 74 Wednesday.

Huge talent.
She led one hell of a wild life - check out her autobiography, Rage to Survive. She's featured pretty heavily in the movie Cadillac Records too, but I understand that the portrayal is not very accurate. The movie is worth watching, though. I may even watch it tonight, in honor of her memory.

All I know is she comes from an era when you actually had to have talent and could sing in order to land a recording contract.

Ronnie Montrose

Ronnie Montrose, guitarist and founder of the rock band Montrose, died on Saturday, March 3, 2012, after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 64.

The news of his death was announced on the Ronnie Montrose official website. You can read the official statement here below.

The band Montrose is best know for its time with former frontman Sammy Hagar, who went on to achieve great fame and fortune with Van Halen. Hagar wrote a lot about his years in Montrose and his collaboration with Ronnie Montrose in his 2011 autobiography Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock. With Hagar, who appeared on the first two albums – Montrose and Paper Money, the band had its greatest success with songs like “Rock Candy,” “Rock The Nation,” and “Bad Motor Scooter.”

Treyvon Martin probably had it coming. Mike Wallace will be eulogized to nauseating excess with the praise journalists are wont to heap upon each other at the loss of one of their own, but on top of Ronnie Montrose, who did a pretty acceptable job of helping bridge the gap between Hendrix and (although I hate to admit it) Van Halen, the world lost a giant that makes Wallace fade into the low-end mediocrity of Mark Kiesling or Jerry Davich. Jim Marshall, who took an already awesome Fender amplifier design and gave it a midrange roar that can make the hair on the necks of even Justin Bieber fans stand straight up, died at the age of 88. He got to enjoy 40+ years of the perfection he achieved at a relatively early age.
