Quote: Gary to pay $5K for Joe Jackson group's trip to memorial service JUL 10 EVENT | Local firms gave meals, limo service, rooms
August 15, 2009 JON SEIDEL Post-Tribune
Gary Mayor Rudy Clay on Friday denied that a pending $5,000 payment from City Hall to Joe Jackson and a Chicago-based R&B group was compensation for their appearance at a Michael Jackson memorial in Gary last month.
"Joe Jackson did not receive one penny for coming into Gary," Clay said.

Michael Jackson's father, Joe, waves as he takes the stage at the July 10 memorial in Gary. The town paid a $5,000 "donation" to Jackson and an R & B group for them to appear. (AP)
The cost for Joe Jackson, the Chi-Lites and a security detail, eight people in all, to fly to the area exceeded the amount Gary provided, Clay said. "It cost more than $5,000 coming out of Los Angeles," he said.
City spokeswoman LaLosa Burns said the $5,000 is a "donation" to Jackson and the others. "It was a donation and we have record of our donation," Burns said.
The mayor's staff released records Thursday afternoon outlining the preliminary cost of the city's memorial for Michael Jackson, a Gary native, July 10 at the U.S. Steel Yard baseball stadium.
Included with the records was a claim form that indicated that a $5,000 payment is pending for "Joe Jackson, Marshall Thompson and the Chi-Lites."http://www.suntimes.com/1717557,CST-NWS ... 15.article "Joe Jackson did not receive one penny for coming into Gary,"poor Griffith.
